You listened to language learning tapes. You read English books. You kept vocabulary notebooks as if your life depended on them. You started using a language-learning app. And you even moved to an English-speaking country! But it feels like nothing is working. Is English a Hard Language to Learn?

When approached right, learning English can also make you feel like you are going on a fun journey: each word has its own story. The first step in this journey is understanding why it is difficult for you. That way, you can create a plan to improve your English fluency.

So Why is English so Confusing?

English is like a big mix of different languages. It’s like a delicious soup with ingredients from all over the world, which makes learning to speak English fluently very tricky!

Unlike many other languages, English has pieces of so many Indo-European languages in it. Imagine this: some languages, like French or Spanish, are very straightforward. But English likes to surprise us with words from everywhere.

For example, “kindergarten” comes from German, meaning “children’s garden”. And “gung ho”, which means “overly energetic” in English, is actually from Mandarin. It means “work together.” Even “chocolate” comes from a tribe in Mexico called Nahuatl! With all these different influences, it’s no wonder you find the English language hard to learn!

The trickiest part is when you want to devise a learning plan that works for you and keep at it. But where to start and how to go about it? So many people give up learning English because it is pretty hard to situate yourself between all those languages and make progress.  That is why knowing how the language is constructed is essential in your English Learning journey. Is English Only Hard for Non-Native Speakers?

The short answer is No! Many native English speakers also struggle with some parts of the language. English can be tricky for both people learning it and those who grew up speaking it!

For example, words that sound the same but mean different things, like “there,” “their,” and “they’re.” Or phrases like “turn off” or “hit the hay” might not make sense if you take them literally. And let’s not forget about slang words like “lit” or “sick,” which can be puzzling for everyone! So, if you’re confused by English, you’re not alone!
